February 15 Update

A quick update before we head out for the winter ski break.

Students in grade 7 have been working on a Webquest to learn about the life-cycle of stars. In addition, earlier in the week, grade seven students learned to use the Research Tool in Google Docs while learning about astronomy. You can see how this tool works and what it does by viewing the video at right. 

Our iPads continue to be used in a variety of ways. Mr. Scanga keeps finding great Apps to use in order to explain important science concepts. The huge variety of Apps for iPad means teachers are often able to find exactly the right tool to teach a concept in an engaging and informative way. Mr. Hiller has had students viewing videos on the iPads in small groups or as individuals, instructing them on how to play ping-pong. The nice thing about the iPad is that students can immediately put the iPad down and start practicing what they have seen. Also, with their own iPad, students are able to pull up videos that fit their particular needs instead of having to watch videos in groups.

Grade seven students have also been working on developing a travel plan. They are using online resources to stay under budget, find train schedules, hotel options, etc. In order to find accurate and timely information, students need to use a variety of information literacy skills. These are real-world skills that students can start to apply right now as they think of their own travel plans or as they assist with family travel plans.

Mr. Rudnicki continues to build out his site, affording his students a variety of ways to interact with the class's content as well as each other. For example, by embedding  a video and Google Doc into a page, students are able to comment on it, engaging with the video's content in a way that would be impractical on YouTube, for example. These types of tools allow teachers to extend conversations about class topics beyond the class while also allowing quieter students to have a voice where they might not speak up in class.
